Ken DeFoor, who serves Texas EquuSearch as a Search Coordinator and member of the Board of Directors was honored with a Community Service Award at the April meeting of the Libertad Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. Mr. Defoor has spent many years giving back to the community following retirement from 50-plus years in law enforcement. The most visible involvement in recent years has been his work with our organization, where he has left his footprint over many miles of our country searching for missing children and adults. Community Service Chairman Nancy Otto (right) presented Defoor (center) with an NSDAR certificate and a pin to honor the occasion. He was accompanied by his lovely wife Jo (left) who he claimed to be the “wind under his wings” all these years with her loyal support of his many community involvements.

05/07/13 — It’s not very often that we can report on a case as miraculous as this one. We were advised yesterday that Amanda Berry, Gina Dejesus and Michele Knight have all been found alive after being missing for nearly a decade. All three were found safe in Ohio, and have been reunited with their families. They were discovered Monday in a home south of downtown Cleveland. The families of Amanda Berry and Gina Dejesus contacted Texas EquuSearch, and Founder and Director Tim Miller met with the families about six years ago. He met with both of the families in Cleveland, Ohio about doing a search up there. He said that he discussed how to put a search together for these girls, six years ago, when we were in Cleveland, and there was just not a starting point. Tim Miller is quoted as saying “that this discovery is a miracle. I just felt as though these two girls were going to be two of them that would be missing — and always be missing — and it would only be a miracle if their bodies were found, let alone be found alive ten years later.”

Amanda Berry disappeared when she was 16 after work, Gina Dejesus disappeared when she was 14 on her way home from school, and Michele Knight disappeared in 2002. They were found a few miles from where they disappeared. A 52-year-old man was arrested after a neighbor apparently heard her screaming for help. Mr. Miller said “he can’t even imagine what these families are going through right now. I can’t even imagine in my wildest dreams…of all of the families I have been with.”

IF YOU PREVIOUSLY REGISTERED FOR THE APRIL 13, 2013 CLASS, YOU WILL NEED TO REGISTER AGAIN — SEE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW:

04/22/13 — Texas Equusearch will be holding a New Member Orientation/Training for new members and/or current members who have not previously attended an orientation class, and we invite you to attend. This training is important and the content is mandatory for all members who are new or current members who have not already attended an Orientation/Training. We will have another class in a few months for those that cannot attend this Orientation/Training. Similar classes are planned for Florida and Ohio, and they will also be posted on the website. If you are a new member, please make every effort to attend this class. The Orientation/Training will be held Saturday, June 1, 2013, at the Knights of Columbus in Dickinson, TX, located at 4132 27th St., Dickinson, TX 77539 (see map below). The Orientation/Training will be from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The instructors will be Eddie and Nova Arguijo, Ron Overman, Carolyn Keane and Jack Boggess. The afternoon portion will be a field exercise, so please wear appropriate search clothing and shoes. If you are going to be an ATV searcher, please do not bring it to training — you will be shown fundamentals only at training. We encourage everyone to bring a sack lunch so no one is late for the field training, which is also required. There are plenty of fast food restaurants in the immediate area if you prefer, but you must be on time to the field exercise, which we will be doing at the Texas EquuSearch office — located just down the street from the Knights of Columbus Hall.

If you plan to attend the Orientation/Training, please register by contacting Sherry McKinney at sherry.mckinney@txeq.org. This class is for Texas EquuSearch Members only, but if you are not a member, you can join now. Additionally, you can bring your completed Membership Application, along with your annual dues in the amount of $25.00 to the training. You will still need to register with our office, either by email to Sherry or calling the office. Please let her know if you are going to join and bring your Application with you to the training. We encourage anyone who is interested in joining, please download the Membership Application off of our website. Alternatively, if you have any questions about our organization, please call our office at (281) 309-9500 and Sherry will answer any questions you may have, and email the Membership Application to you.
