05/16/12– Police Officer’s Memorial Day and Police Week was initiated in October of 1961 when Congress asked President John F. Kennedy to designate May 15th of each year to specially honor peace officers, and the dangerous job they do to protect us. May 15th of each year also pays remembrance, a very special tribute to the thousands of officers of all branches of law enforcement … especially those that died in the line of duty to keep you and your community safe. President John F. Kennedy signed the bill into law and it took affect on October 1st of 1962. In 1994, President Bill Clinton amended the law directing that flags be flown at half-staff on May 15th of each year to honor the mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, duty partners, friends and buddies that paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect our society – and the priceless people of our communities.

The Texas EquuSearch family has several members that are either current or retired law enforcement officers. We also hold the highest respect for law enforcement because we realize what a great job they do. But the Texas EquuSearch family also has a very special connection to two deputies that paid the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty to protect the communities they served – and the most valuable part of that community … the people. We salute, with the highest respect, the two deputies below and the thousands of deputies that gave their lives to keep you and your families safe. If you happen to see an officer this week, if possible, tell him or her “Thanks”.

Harris County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Ricky Yates was killed in the line of duty on January 25th 1994. Ricky was tragically killed in a traffic accident while enroute to an assignment to monitor a school zone and keep the children of the school safe. Ricky was a nine year veteran of the Harris County Sheriff’s Department, and left his wife, two daughters, a son and several grand-children to mourn his death. Ricky’s brother, Phillip Yates is also a Harris County deputy and a Search Coordinator with Texas EquuSearch.

Deputy Shane Detwiler was a deputy with the Chambers County Sheriff’s Department on July 13th 2009 when he was dispatched to a disturbance call involving firearms. Shane was brutally gunned-down as he approached the mobile home. Shane left his wife, two sons, a daughter, his mother and step-father, his father and step-mother a sister and his two grand-mothers to mourn his death. His mother, Cheryl Railsback is a long-time member of Texas EquuSearch and has successfully worked multiple cases as our K-9 handler and searcher.

05/14/12 — Texas EquuSearch will be resuming the mock search with the Houston Police Department on Tuesday – May 15th 2012 at 8:00 a.m. We will be in need of foot searchers only. Our staging area is at 7306 White Lane Ct. in Pearland, Texas 77584. Please contact Ken DeFoor if you are will be attending the search. His contact number is (713) 202-3404.

05/13/12 – In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Monday is the beginning of many activities in which police officers are honored.

As part of “National Police Week”, a national police organization has chosen the Houston Police Department to host this year’s conference. And in turn, the Houston Police Department has chosen Texas EquuSearch to also play a big part in this year’s conference. Part of our involvement is for Texas EquuSearch to conduct a mock search … which will be videoed for training of investigators and officers involved in missing person cases. After editing, the video will be seen, and critiqued by many law enforcement officers and agencies throughout the United States. Ladies and gentlemen, let’s be honest. This is a really big honor. There are dozens of teams that would have done anything to be in our shoes. We will be representing Texas EquuSearch and seen by a lot of people. So it is very important that we all look sharp and very professional. Be clean shaven (unless you have a beard). We want to display the highest degree of training, skills, dedication, integrity and intelligence. We want them to have confidence and trust on our abilities.

The special mock-search assignment will begin at 6:30 a.m. on Monday – May 14th 2012 at Houston Police Department’s Mykawa Rd. sub-station, located at 8300 Mykawa Rd. 77033, (between Belfort St. and Airport Blvd.) The GPS for that location is: 29°39’29.83″N 95°19’0.38″W. We will be in need of searchers on foot and ATVs. Please be prompt so that you do not miss any information being provided. The Houston Police Department has insisted that all Texas EquuSearch personnel must wear their Texas EquuSearch, office issued t-shirts. It is preferred that you wear the white TES t-shirts. Please wear black or dark long pants. If you don’t have black or dark pants, please wear blue jeans. But do not wear camouflage, green beige, pink or any other colors. If you have any further questions, contact Frank Black @ (713) 301-6813. Thank you very much for your help in this project.

Texas EquuSearch has been selected as one of 500 nonprofit finalists in Toyota’s 100 Cars for Good program, a major philanthropic initiative in which the automaker is giving 100 vehicles over the course of 100 days. Texas EquuSearch was selected as a finalist from more than 4,000 applications nationwide. We have requested a Toyota Tundra truck, which will be used to transport our boat, trailers, ATVs or horses. The contest has very strict and specific rules, which are detailed below. Please view the You Tube video below or go to TexasEquuSearch100, our official You Tube account at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRfLlSuLaf0. This post will also appear on our official Facebook Fan Page, located at http://www.facebook.com/texasequusearchandrecovery. There is also an Event on Facebook, which can be found at http://www.facebook.com/?ref=tn_tnmn#!/events/290717017682710/. We are asking everyone to join the Event, invite all of your Facebook friends, and ask them to invite all of their friends. The organization that receives the most votes WINS! The trucks we have now have over 144,000 and 191,000 miles, respectively. They are both in need of repair on almost a monthly basis. We desperately need a dependable vehicle to transport our equipment to searches. Time is of the essence when we are called to assist on searches. Please watch the video below and, read the rules under the video and cast your vote on MAY 23, 2012 by going to www.100carsforgood.com. You can sign up to receive a voting reminder on the morning of your scheduled voting date.
